Food is a Gift from God
Jan 22, 2025Do you just ever get really confused and overwhelmed by food? With the massive amounts of information that we have nowadays between Instagram, TikTok (for now LOL), Google and more... it seems like nothing is "right" anymore.
I mean seriously... I have seen Instagram Reels of people saying things like eggs, vegetables and even WATER are "bad"?! How on Earth are we ever supposed to view food as good let alone a gift?!
But the thing is, while world whispers lies that leave us feeling overwhelmed and confused: our God is not one of confusion and overwhelm but of peace. In today's blog we are sharing how through God's grace we can view food as a gift to our bodies that are one of the most precious gifts we've been given.
While we could go on and on (and we do elaborate more here on our podcast episode where we tackle this topic) here are five simple ways to reframe how we see our bodies as gifts from God and how food serves as a precious provision to nourish those gifts. My prayer is that these truths will not only shift your mindset but also ignite a deeper gratitude for the way you care for yourself.
1. Food Reflects God’s Provision
We are often so blessed that it's easy to forget what a blessing from God food is. While it's very real to struggle with overeating, honestly, what a blessing and privilege that God has blessed us with access to plentiful amounts of food in the first place.
Food is a tangible reminder of His faithfulness and care for us. He made our bodies to depend on something outside of ourselves and literally need it to stay alive. Every single meal we eat is a testament to His provision, and a reminder that we are dependent on more than ourselves.
Practical Tip: Every day as you eat, remind yourself of what a blessing God's provision through food is, and ask Him to help you feel as dependent on Him as you do on your next meal.
2. Food Enables Us to Serve and Love
A few weeks ago, I made a mean for a family who had just had a new baby. Anybody else love a good MealTrain?! But as I spent time preparing that meal, I was reminded that food is so more than just fuel; it’s a way to love and serve others. Whether you’re feeding your family or sharing a meal with a friend, food creates opportunities to extend God’s love to others.
Practical Tip: Choose one person this week to bless with a meal or baked treat. As you prepare it, pray for them and thank God for the chance to share His love through food.
3. Food Brings Joy and Fellowship
All throughout Scripture, we see that much of Jesus' ministry was done around the table. He was often eating with people, because meal times have a way of naturally bringing people together and inviting them into conversation. Food has a beautiful way of building relationships, whether it’s a celebratory feast or a simple snack shared with a friend. It’s a gift that fosters friendship and joy.
Practical Tip: Plan a meal this week to enjoy with loved ones. Turn off distractions, and focus on meaningful conversations while savoring the food God has provided.
4. Food Nourishes Our Resilient Bodies
After having my first child, I realized how much my body relied on good nutrition to heal and regain strength. Food is a gift that supports, heals, and strengthens the incredible resilience God built into our bodies. It provides the energy and nutrients we need to thrive. In the podcast I quote Dr. Mark Hyman who says that food is medicine. God literally has given us this incredible gift in food that can actually heal the bodies that He gave us and help them function at their highest capacity.
Practical Tip: Choose one nourishing meal this week and reflect on how it nourishes and even heals your body. Take a moment to thank God for the nutrients that help you care for yourself and others.
5. God’s Grace Covers Our Choices Around Food
For so much of my life I felt guilty every single time I ate something that I called "bad". I never fully enjoyed ice cream with the family, cinnamon rolls on Christmas or a Thanksgiving meal because the whole time I was thinking about how "bad" I was being. But God’s grace meets us in our struggles and reminds us that food is not about rules but about His provision and care. Food isn't "good" or "bad", but instead He has given us all things to enjoy in moderation. We can fully enjoy delicious foods as a blessing that He made them to be enjoyed and to taste good, and also practice balance by nourishing our bodies well most of the time to take care of them. His grace allows us to approach food with freedom and gratitude.
Practical Tip: When you feel guilt creeping in, pause and pray. Ask God to remind you of His grace and thank Him for the gift of food that both tastes good, and can heal and nourish us.
