5 Ways to Treat Your Body as a Gift
Jan 03, 20255 Powerful Ways to View and Treat Your Body as a Gift
As Christian women, our bodies are a gift from God, yet we often struggle with how to view and care for them in a meaningful way. Too often, society pressures us to focus on outward appearances, leaving us disconnected from the true purpose and beauty of our bodies. But what if we could shift our perspective and start seeing our bodies the way God sees them?
In the latest Fit for His Glory podcast episode “Your Body Is a Gift Challenge”, we explore how to treat our bodies as the gifts they truly are. You can listen to the podcast here as we talk all about the challenge, our hearts behind this topic and how you can get involved.
But for today, we wanted to encourage you to start viewing and treating your body as a gift now.
Here are five powerful ways to honor and care for your body as a Christian woman, based on biblical truth:
1. Recognize Your Body as a Temple of the Holy Spirit
One of the most transformative ways to view your body is to see it as a temple of the Holy Spirit. The verse we have based this challenge around is 1 Corinthians 6:19-20: "Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body."
The Bible reminds us that our bodies are not our own—they are God's. Think about it this way: if someone gave you a $600,000+ house, would you take care of it? Or would you let it collect dust, get molded, and the lawn get overgrown?
If someone gave you an incredible gift like that, you'd probably take extremely good care of it!
Well... how much more infinitely valuable is this body God has given you?
He's given you this physical gift as a vessel through which the spiritual can take place. So there is a call to take care of it well.
This realization shifts how we care for ourselves. By nourishing, moving, and resting our bodies, we honor God and the sacred space He’s entrusted to us.
2. Celebrate What Your Body Can Do, Not Just How It Looks
Too often, we focus on how our bodies look instead of what they can do. Every day, our bodies are capable of miracles—from the simple act of breathing to the strength needed to serve others. If you haven't, I'd really recommend listening to the song "Breathe" by Maverick City music as a reminder of the miracles that your body performs every single day. It truly is a miracle that we can breathe.
Celebrate your body’s abilities, whether it’s running a marathon or simply getting through the day with energy and grace. Thank God for the strength He’s given you.
3. Speak Truth Over Your Body
The way we speak to ourselves matters. Negative self-talk and insecurity rob us of peace and joy. Instead, speak God’s truth over your body. Remind yourself daily that you are “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14) and that that verse isn't about you, it's about God. The passage says "I praise YOU for I am fearfully and wonderfully made". It's about recognizing God's power and might in how He was able to make you. For so many years I read that verse as a way to try to convince myself that I did look beautiful, because Jesus said so. But that misses the whole point.
Our bodies are beautiful, incredible, miraculous vessels that get to carry us as we do eternally significant work for the Lord. Let's speak truth over it every single day that is about so much more than what they look like. Speaking life into your body aligns your mindset with God’s plan for you and empowers you to live confidently in your skin, because you realize that your body's purpose is to honor God— not look a certain way.
4. Steward Your Body for God’s Glory
God has given you your body for a reason. It’s not just a vessel for your soul—it’s an instrument for fulfilling His purpose in your life. Whether it’s caring for your family, engaging in ministry, or serving others, your body allows you to live out your calling. When you care for it, you’re better equipped to do the work God has called you to do.
So as you eat healthier foods, get plenty of movement and prioritize rest— realize that you are doing an act of worship.
"I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship." Romans 12:1
Stewarding your health for the glory of God is an act of worship if you choose to view it that way.
5. Let Go of Perfection and Embrace Progress
Striving for perfection can be exhausting, and it’s often unrealistic. Instead, view your body is a gift by focusing on progress. Every small step you take toward better health and fitness is a victory in God’s eyes because you have shown up to be obedient. Whether it’s eating a balanced meal or committing to a daily walk, progress is what truly matters. Remember, God values obedience over perfection.
Every day His mercies are new. Every moment is a chance to surrender, learn, and grow.
Stop pursuing perfection because for a human, it's not possible.
Instead, choose to view your body as the gift from God that it is and take actions every single day to treat it as such.
